During coronavirus lockdown, I started taking training sessions on kickboxing from my partner. I was stuck at one point with no visible improvement on my posture. He suggested that I close my eyes and try to rehearse my movements in slow motion. I did the same. I visualised and mentally rehearsed how my body, feet and hand will move together in sync, how my body and hands will turn, at what angle will my feet contact the punching bag. And it did wonders. I was able to improve my posture and movement. On that day, I realised the power of visualization.

The technique of visualisation is not new. It’s been there for ages. It is used as one of the technique to help learn meditation in Tibet. Many elite athletes, sportspersons, CEOs, super achievers practice it to enhance their performance. Even in medical science, research is going on to see the impact of visualization on patient’s recovery from serious illness.

However, this is the most under-utilized skillset in our day-to-day life. We all know that an image is 1000 times more powerful than words. It leaves a lasting impression on our brain, allowing it to retain more information quickly. Still, most of us are not are not aware how to put it to practice.

Here are 3 simple techniques you can follow to improve the visualization as a part of your daly life.

  1. Compliment meditation with detailed visualization: Perform a 15 minutes meditation daily. During meditation, envision the goal you want to achieve. And then slowly retrace the activities you would have to do to reach the end state. Expand your mental imagery to include the other senses to help you immerse in it completely. You should be able to take a note of minute details of your journey. Such a detailed imagery would make you aware of not only milestones but also about tough spots and challenges you may face. This activity will help you to train your mind and gain clarity in the actions needed to achieve your end goal.
  2. Practice & feel the results: Many may say that visualization is just like a wishful thinking. Yes, it will in case it is not practiced. The impact of daily practice can be enhanced when you imagine yourself of what you would become because of doing such an activity. This will help you to remain focused, motivated and energised. This is a common technique many fitness trainers use in gyms to keep their clients going beyond the set limits.
  3. Doodling: This is the easiest of technique. Instead of writing your goals in mere words, try to doodle. Draw to represent your goals with the help of minimum words. This will help your mind to create a mental imagery of your goal.

By practicing these three techniques on daily basis, sub-conscious mind will prepare your mind, body and conscious and make your inner convictions stronger. This powerful self-transformation tool will help you to become stronger, happier and successful.

As rightly put by Paramahansa Yogananda “Proper visualization by the exercise of concentration and willpower enables us to materialize thoughts, not only as dreams or visions in the mental realm, but also as experience in the material realm.”
